![]() ![]() In conclusion it was worth to spend time with it but not for a second time because the movies themes and characters aren't hard to understand, the story is rather generic I didn't got that emotional investet and it is not that thought provoking. The art is a big plus because it adds to the summer vibes with its bright colors and overall unique style. But he is the one to motivate Smile to smile without her mask while he starts to express himself in words in front of a lot of people. I like both how both leading roles overcome their fears in the end though Cherry's speech get a bit over the top consequently a bit inauthentic. So she is hiding something about her appearance while Cherry hides something of his personality. Smile the second protagonist hides her buck teeth by wearing a surgical mask. However, he doesn't like to read them out loud because of his shyness. He likes to write haikus which he posts on social media. To assure that he wears headphones so noone talks to him. Cherry, the protagonist, is a very shy person that prefers it to stay unseen, quite and antisocial. Words bubble up like soda pop is a beatiful and uniquely looking movie that deals mainly with the theme of what we hide that we don't have the heart to show. Bottom line: perhaps for someone understanding the subtleties of the language, this film is smarter than how it felt for me, but even so I felt like the animation was decent yet paint by numbers, the plot too contrived and the pacing all over the place. And so many clichés that were used mostly for nostalgia's sake. The same drawings reused for different scenes. The thematic coincidence happening again and again and again. The slow moving characters on the field and in the house and noticing things a few seconds after looking at the same spot. The discovery of an old vinyl disk in an area of constant high heat. The mall overview scene at the beginning, made from 3D modelling but trying hard to appear hand drawn, only with the same cars appearing again and again and again. I mean, there are some cringy scenes in it. The idea is not bad, but I felt like the implementation was. I am sure some things have been lost in translation, but as a non-Japanese I focused on story, plot and animation, and they are all barely average. Now, it feels derivative, slow and uninteresting. This is a film that would have been brilliant 20 years ago. Also, make sure you listen to its music while driving, its so peaceful! In overall, this movie kinda gave me a lot of joy during my black days as an university student, haha, so if ever you are feeling sad or something similar, this movie will draw a smile on your face every time you watch it. idk, for me, the story was going in harmony with the music, the character development and the color palette, i means, the transition between days and nights are just well executed. In an other hand, some peoples may think the story was slow or ''cringy'' but i didn't feel it that way at all, may be because i am an emotional person, may be i like stuff that doesn't go to fast. I basically re-watched the intro like 5 times before keep going with the movie because the song was so good, then i made some research and found out the composer is Kensuke Ushio (now it all makes sens, the guy is a god with this type of music). From the start, i felt in love with the soundtrack and beautiful art offered by this masterpiece. I loved every single second of this movie. Overall, a beautifully animated movie with a simple yet clever story and premise. The movie should be a bit longer to make both moments, especially the first, more impactful. However, the emotion in the second kinda overshadowed the first moment. The second big moment was beautiful and satisfying though. There were two big moments, and the first one didn't have enough screen times to linger with me. My only problem was that the ending felt fairly rushed. However, I loved that they were tied together through haiku, and that the play of words and beautiful poetry helped both characters grow and face their insecurities. They both had their own insecurities and ways to hide them. ![]() At first, I wasn't sure how the haiku would tie to the main story, but towards the end, the play of words was clever and connect everything together well. It was a cute story where the main characters tried to find an old record. In the second half was where the serious stuff happened. I felt like cruising along with the characters and the dynamic city. ![]() The premise of the story was pretty unique. I adored the style because almost every scene was full of vibrant color. The animation was visually striking and popping. Even though it was less than an hour and a half, I enjoyed this anime a lot. ![]()
